In addition to breeding and training, Jim also judges. He currently maintains a 4-H card in Indiana as well as a National Quarter Pony Association card. Jim frequently judges open shows as well. Exhibitors and show stewards often comment on how much they enjoy having him as a judge. He is fair to the exhibitors and knows how to move the show along while making sure everyone has their chance in the pen.
When appropriate, Jim prides himself on helping educate exhibitors on what judges are looking for. It is not uncommon for him to talk to two or three exhibitors in the class to comment on their performance or give them tips on how they could improve in the future.
