Dettmers' Rising Sun is pleased to now provide clients with a new product in wound healing. Our veterinarian has been working for a number of years on producing this exciting product that has changed the way we treat wounds here at the farm. Please take a look at some of the information that we have provided here. We now keep Eclipse Wound Care products on hand at all times and it has proven itself over time to be effective at preventing scars and speeding healing. The following article was found on the BeluMedX website. If you are interested in purchasing these products, please contact us, and we will make sure to get it packaged and shipped to you as quickly as possible.
ECLIPSE
The research team at BeluMedX uses
Biotechnology combined with research in growth factors and tissue
engineering to evaluate new wound healants for nonhealing equine
wounds. One of our major focus areas is the use of natural compounds
derived from horse blood combined with antioxidants and vitamins and
minerals to induce regenerative wound healing. Our healing products
contain all-natural compounds including Vitamin C, aloe vera and
growth
factors in physiologic balance from the horses' own blood. These wound
healing products have the capacity to improve the quality of life of
your horse if it becomes wounded, and may extend the life of the
animal. Our products have produced unprecedented success in generating
quality healing in a short time in the hard-to-heal, poorly
vascularized lower equine limb. Conventional treatments for many skin
problems, especially topical steroids, are suppressive in nature and
potentially toxic. Although helpful to clean infected wounds, hydrogen
peroxide and alcohol are harsh chemicals that can damage healing
tissue if used in excess, for example for the treatment of chronic
wounds. Use of our natural wound healing products eliminates the need
for these chemicals because they contain nature's most powerful
natural wound healing factors including growth factor proteins,
vitamins, minerals and antioxidants possessing anti-bacterial,
anti-fungal and tissue regenerating activity. Our new wound healants
do NOT contain immunosuppressive or harsh substances. We use
all-natural compounds.
Antioxidants in our Platelet-Rich Plasma
Vitamin C
Our line of platelet-rich plasma wound care products contain natural
compounds proven to promote rapid wound healing. One
antioxidant in our product is vitamin C or ascorbic acid.
What do antioxidants do that makes them so effective? When an organism
uses oxygen at the cellular level, unstable molecules termed "free
radicals" are generated. Free radicals include "reactive oxygen
species" such as superoxides and hydrogen peroxide and "reactive
nitrogen species" such as nitric oxide and peroxynitrites. Free
radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that cause damage to cellular
components such as DNA, proteins or lipids and can induce cell death.
The body generates free radicals all the time, and they are generally
neutralized by biochemical reactions. Antioxidants trap and neutralize
excess free radicals. The levels of free radicals are very high in a
wound due to damage to cells in wounded tissue. Immune cells migrating
into the wound bed induce inflammation and release free radicals that
damage nearby cells. In an injury, antioxidants in the body may not be
able to neutralize all of the damage because the amount of free
radicals is very high due to the tissue injury. The use of topical
antioxidants can thus be very helpful to minimize damage and promote
rapid healing.
Vitamin C helps prevent depletion of antioxidants stored in the skin.
By this mechanism, vitamin C prevents damage by free radicals. As an
antioxidant, Vitamin C also induces accelerated healing of the skin
and stimulates collagen production. Vitamin C is a free radical
scavenger that promotes healing (Lewis and Elvin-Lewis, 1997) by
accelerating differentiation or maturation of skin cells (Lopez-Lluch,
et al., 2001; Savini, et al., 2002). Vitamin C is a known stimulator
of collagen production (Nowak, et al., 2000). For example, topical
vitamin C reverses damage to skin induced by aging (Traikovich, 1999).
Aging can damage the collagen fibers below the skin's surface and
cause the skin to fall into the grooves creating wrinkles. Topical
vitamin C restores collagen fibers to a firm youthful state.
Our platelet-rich plasma gel product stimulates the formation of good
collagen. Tissues not treated with our product have poorly organized
collagen (Carter, et al., 2003). Our platelet-rich plasma gel creates
healed tissues with a better type of collagen. The resultant tissue
contains dense, tightly packed, organized collagen fibers (Carter, et
al., 2003) similar to collagen in uninjured tissue. Platelet-rich
plasma gel creates regenerated tissue that matures or differentiates
faster than untreated (control) tissues, thus the tissue heals more
quickly than untreated tissues (Carter, et al., 2003).
Aloe vera
Our EclipseŽ Brand Wound Healing Aid is a wound healant that contains
aloe vera and is made from platelet-rich plasma. Aloe vera is a
well-known natural healant used for centuries to promote healing of
the skin (Lewis and Elvin-Lewis, 1997). For generations, Native
Americans have taken advantage of the healing capacity of the raw
juice of the leaf of the aloe plant by creating a salve for the
treatment of thermal burns, chemical burns, sunburns, insect bites and
wounds (Mary Summer Rain, 1990). One report dates from 1935 when aloe
vera was used to treat a burn: within 5 weeks healing was complete
with full skin regeneration and no scarring (Collins and Collins,
1935). Aloe vera is also anti-bacterial (Lorenzetti et al., 1964) and
anti-fungal. In addition, aloe vera is an antioxidant that serves as a
popular aid for the treatment of burning, itching, minor cuts and
thermal burns. Scarring is prevented in the healed wound with the use
of aloe vera (Lewis and Elvin-Lewis, 1997). Aloe vera is an
anti-inflammatory and promoted wound healing when applied to a second
degree burn (Somboonwong, et al., 2000). When tested in granulation
tissue (or the "scab") in the rat, aloe vera increased collagen
synthesis, collagen content and the degree of collagen crosslinking (Chithra,
et al., 1998a; Chithra, et al., 1998b). Fresh leaf pulp extract of
aloe vera protected against oxidant-induced cellular damage (Singh, et
al., 2000), demonstrating the antioxidant properties of aloe vera's
healing benefits. The anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antioxidant, and
anti-inflammatory properties of aloe vera combined with it's ability
to increase collagen content without the creation of a scar makes it
an ideal natural healant.
Our approach to wound treatment is unique because we use all natural
healants containing growth factors from horse blood combined with
antioxidants and vitamins and minerals that have been used for
centuries as wound healing aids. This novel, natural combination of
healing compounds in physiologic balance produces faster healing and
regenerated tissue with high quality collagen (Carter, et al., 2003).
In summary, when applied to hard-to-heal or routine wounds, our
product creates tissue similar to uninjured tissue (Carter, et al.,
2003).
